The Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship Program (MMUFP) is funded nationally by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as its signature initiative to remedy the problem of underrepresentation of scholars of color among college professors. The program is designed to encourage undergraduates to enter PhD programs and to pursue academic careers. Over its 25-year history, the MMUFP at Williams has grown in strength and scope. Of the 25 Mellon Mays Fellows who graduated in the classes of 2007 to 2011, 64% have either earned PhDs or are enrolled in PhD programs. Seven former Mellon Mays Fellows are currently members of the Williams faculty.
- In 2013, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded the college $64,000 in support of an exchange program between the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship programs at Williams and the University of Cape Town. The grant funded expenses for Mellon Mays undergraduate fellows and faculty from the two schools to visit each other’s campuses.
