Welcome to the Williams College Grants Office
The mission of the Grants Office is to help faculty members find external funding to advance their research and teaching. The Grants Office also seeks and secures financial support from foundations, governmental agencies, and corporations whose interests correspond with the priorities and programs of Williams College. These grants to Williams have supported students, faculty, curriculum, facilities, and many other initiatives that enrich the community here at the college.
The Grant Process
The Grants Office can help you through each stage of the grant process, whether you’re ready to find and apply for grants or want support while stewarding your post-award relationship with a funder.
The Grants Office is a full-service, life-cycle office providing grant-seekers assistance with:
- identification of potential funding sources
- guidance and coordination for reaching out to prospective funders
- proposal preparation, editing, budget prep and review
- proposal submission
- award acceptance, negotiation, and set-up
- grants management, stewardship, and reporting
- compliance with Williams and funding agency regulations
Brenda Thomas and Justine Beringer serve as Authorized Organizational Representatives, conducting final review and submission for all federal proposals. The office is also available to assist with post-award management, serving as a liaison with funders, assisting with contract negotiation, providing support for extension and reallocation requests, and helping draft reports and track progress on institutional projects.

Find funding
Links to help you find external and internal funding can be found on this page. Here you will find links to our curated list of popular opportunities, grouped by academic division, as well as a separate list for fine and performing arts.
If you are interested in Federal grants only, you can explore grants.gov.
The grants office is also happy to search for funding for you. Please contact Brenda Thomas to set up an appointment to discuss your needs. After meeting with you, we will then prepare a list of external and internal grants possibilities that best suit your research.
We have resources to assist you with each step of your grant or fellowship application, and can help walk you through the procedure. Click the link below to learn more.
Details to know when preparing your proposal.
The Grants Office is also here to help you manage your grant award. We can assist you in reviewing the award terms, setting up your grant account, sharing news of your award, charging expenses to the grant, modifying your funded project’s timeline or budget, and reporting on your project.
Please notify the grants office as soon as you hear about your award. The grants office will review the award terms and process the paperwork to officially accept your award. Brenda Thomas is the sole Authorized Organization Representative (AOR) authorized to accept an award that will be administered through the college.
Once your award has been accepted, the grants office will:
- Begin the process to set up your award in Workday. If there is a subaward, the grants office will work with the subaward institution to complete additional required paperwork and set up the subaward and invoicing protocol.
- Set up a meeting with you to provide financial training and review relevant policy governing expenditures and reporting (i.e. procurement policy, allowable costs, effort reporting, etc).
- Inform you of any training that will be required per Federal responsible conduct of research requirements and discuss any other relevant grants-related institutional possibilities.
